Medical Biography

 
A/Prof Sudarshan Paramsothy is a highly accomplished, Australian trained but internationally credentialed and awarded, Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist. He treats all aspects of general gastrointestinal and liver disorders. His practice philosophy involves an evidence-based approach to patient care delivered in an empathic and holistic manner. He employs the latest developments at the forefront of the field tailored to his patient’s unique circumstances.
 
A/Prof Paramsothy undertook his secondary schooling at Sydney Grammar School, achieving a University Admissions Index (UAI) of 99.95. He then enrolled in undergraduate Medicine at The University of New South Wales. He was awarded numerous University prizes relating to the medical sciences, ultimately graduating with First Class Honours. After rotating through major tertiary institutions in Sydney, Australia to complete his Gastroenterology & Hepatology specialty training, A/Prof Paramsothy was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP).
 
He subsequently undertook a PhD through St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney and The University of New South Wales, investigating therapeutic microbial manipulation in ulcerative colitis using faecal microbiota transplantation. He was awarded an NHMRC Postgraduate Research Scholarship along with several national and international grants to perform this research. His PhD work attracted global recognition with plenary presentations and awards at major international conferences and was ultimately published in the extremely prestigious “Lancet” medical journal.
 
To further his subspecialty expertise, A/Prof Paramsothy then embarked on a two year overseas advanced Gastroenterology and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) fellowship. He was awarded highly competitive advanced fellowship positions in the United States, first at the University of Chicago Medicine (2016-17) and then at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York (2017-18). Both institutions are world-renowned centres of excellence in Gastroenterology and IBD with global leaders in the field. His time at these institutions provided a unique opportunity to work alongside international authority figures with unparalleled access to cutting-edge clinical practice, novel therapeutic agents and research developments.

Upon his return to Australia, A/Prof Paramsothy took up a position as a Consultant Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist at Concord Repatriation General Hospital, Sydney, co-managing their busy IBD service. He has rooms in Burwood and Parkway San Clinic / Sydney Adventist Hospital. A/Prof Sudarshan Paramsothy is well versed in, and sees in his practice, all aspects of general gastroenterology and hepatology. His specific subspecialty interests include inflammatory bowel disease and high-quality colorectal cancer surveillance. He performs gastroscopy and colonoscopy at Strathfield Private Hospital, Macquarie University Hospital and Sydney Adventist Hospital and has public lists at Concord Repatriation General Hospital. He is accredited by the Conjoint Committee for the Recognition of Training in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (CCRTGE) in upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and colonoscopy.

A/Prof Sudarshan Paramsothy has academic affiliations with the University of Sydney (Clinical Associate Professor) and Macquarie University and remains active in both teaching and research. He is involved in teaching and research supervision at all levels, from medical student to Gastroenterology trainees and multiple PhD students. His main research interests relate to inflammatory bowel disease, the gastrointestinal microbiota and evidence-based therapeutic microbial manipulation strategies. He was awarded a prestigious NHMRC Investigator Grant (2021-2025) for his academic endeavours. Given his recognised expertise and publications, A/Prof Paramsothy often speaks at national and international conferences, serves on numerous educational / institutional and pharmaceutical advisory boards & committees, and is a regular invited peer reviewer for the premier journals in the field of gastrointestinal diseases.
