What is Endoscopy (Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy)?
An endoscopy is a procedure to look inside your gastrointestinal (GI) tract using a video-camera attached to the tip of a thin flexible fibre-optic tube. It is performed under sedation. During these procedures, small samples of your gut lining can be obtained for testing. Pre-cancerous growths (polyps) can also be removed during these procedures. There are two main types of endoscopy:
Gastroscopy
A thin fibre-optic tube is inserted through the mouth to view your oesophagus, stomach and first part of the small intestine.
Colonoscopy
A thin fibre-optic tube is inserted through your back passage (anus) to view your entire large intestine (colon) and the last part of small intestine (terminal ileum).
Bowel Preparation Instructions
If Dr Paramsothy arranges a colonoscopy for you as part of your management, it is important that you carefully follow the bowel preparation instructions to maximise the yield of the procedure. This will help ensure that your colon is adequately cleared of contents to optimise visibility and allow for a detailed examination of the bowel. If the preparation is not adequate, parts of your bowel may not be visualised due to retained stool content. Please refer to the attached information sheet on bowel preparation. If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to contact the staff for assistance.
